Facundo Jainikoski, the 18-year-old Argentinos Juniors forward, is preparing for the U19 South American Games final this Friday. The young talent, who has already made 21 first-team appearances for El Bicho, will be a key figure for Diego Placente's side against Paraguay in Rosario.
The decisive match is scheduled for 15:00. The Argentine youth team arrives after steady improvement in the tournament, having lost their opening game to the same Paraguayan side. Without a pre-tournament training camp, the squad gelled during the competition and produced their best performance against Peru, showing a more vertical and aggressive style. Three goals in the dying minutes of their last three matches show their agonising spirit and refusal to give up.
A childhood sacrifice
Jainikoski's journey began far from La Paternal. At just 11 years old, he travelled from Posadas for a trial with Argentinos Juniors. He passed and immediately joined the club's boarding house, a radical change for a child. “It was very complicated. Being so young, leaving your family, your home and your neighbourhood friends is very hard,” the player explained. He attended the school inside the stadium and soon stood out, becoming a champion and top scorer in the sixth division of the youth setup.
“But it's also a sacrifice you have to make to fulfil your dreams,” he added. “I am very grateful to my parents. If it weren't for them, I don't know if I'd be here today.” His senior debut came at 17 against Sarmiento, marking the start of a career that now also sees him as a regular for the U19s, having received his first call-up at U15 level in 2024.
Marks of life
Resilience, a word tattooed on his neck, defines his path. On his right arm he bears the name of his mother, Daniela, and on his left a series of tattoos dedicated to his family: his siblings, three angels, and a biblical passage from Philippians that reads 'I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me'. They are permanent reminders of the pillars that supported him during his years in the boarding house.
His progress is an example of the Argentinos Juniors academy, which under Nicolás Diez has handed debuts this year to other youngsters like Jerónimo Gómez Matar, Matías Satas, Thomas de Martis, Alejandro Tello and Tomás Parmo. The first team, however, is going through a tough spell. Their last outing was a 1-0 defeat to Rosario Central on September 20, with Iván Ovando scoring. That result is part of a five-match winless run (LDDLD), which includes draws against Gimnasia and Barracas Central.
The next league fixture is on October 3, at home to Tigre, a key match to end the poor form. For now, Jainikoski's immediate focus is 300 kilometres northwest, on the pitch in Rosario, where he and his group aim to leave everything on the line to win the gold medal.
